Tis The Season To Get Comfy In Your Comfy Clothes

October 27, 2015

Tis the season for sweaters, the big sweatshirts, jeans, puffy jackets and the sweats all being pulled out of storage.  It's all the season I always found myself indulging in more comfort food than ever.  It's not hard to do with all the upcoming holidays. Every where I go there are pumpkin donuts, pies, caramel apples and baked goods.  I had a very bad habit of eating so much more then I should have and once I started it was so hard for me to stop...let's be honest I didn't stop until I was full.  Why?  Well at the time it was the only thing that was making me feel good.  All the sugar gave me a natural high and because of all the depression and anxiety medicine I was on, it felt good to feel something.  I was number to everything, but when I loaded up on sugar I felt good.  Then I crashed and craved more, which began a very evil sugar cycle.  Hence the weight crept on after many years of living this way.  Even though I was very active, I could not out work what I was putting into my body on a daily basis.

So how do you stop this vicious cycle?  It's not easy.  Even now when I have too much sugar, I still crave it.  When I tried dieting in the past, I would fail miserable because I either wasn't chosing the right things and that led me to making poor choices all the time.  For instance when I did weight watchers 6 or 7 times, I always saved my point for the WW treats like the mini cakes, chocolate chocolate chip muffins or their ice cream snicker bars.  What happened when I ate those items?  I saved more points for more of them, leaving me to eaten very unhealthy foods.  Then I tried diets that eliminated all sugar and that made it worse because I wanted it all the time.  You know when you are told you can not have something, suddenly you want it worse then you did before you were told no.
This season I will successfully enjoy treats and not gain any weight.  Following a clean lifestyle allows me to indulge and treat myself now and then, 10-20% of the time and the rest of the week I am eating clean.  This means if I want something bad enough, I can have it.  It also means I am not having it everyday and it also means when I have a treat it's not the biggest treat I can find.  All in moderation.  Do I sometimes go over what I should be eating, absolutely...I am human, I make mistakes.  This process works because even when I do mess up, I get back on track and I don't stress about it...I just keep moving forward.
